Public commission: Kornellen elder care home in Örebro

Miriam Parkman April 26, 2023

Studio Supersju made five site-specific woven art works for Kornellen elder care home in Bettorp, Örebro between 2021-2022. In the entrance foyer, a triptyque of two ryas and one tapestry were created to create a calm yet energizing feeling to the residents, staff and visitors entering there. We were inspired by the canal running through Örebro city, and the symbolism between flowing water and life’s final destination. For the small tapestry we found our motif from the near by nature reservation, where two orchid species had a special protection and appreciation.

I made the original sketch depicting these two species as seen on an early morning woodland walk, glistening from sun rays reaching in between the trees, refreshed from the morning dew. It felt important to bring nature inside for those who are no longer capable of taking these walks, and possibly offer them a feeling of a freshly picked bouquet each time they pass the foyer.

I wove the tapestry between December 2021 and January 2022 and it was installed later in the spring on 2022.

The two ryas were designed by Studio Supersju and woven by me, Vega Määttä Siltberg and Mirjam Hemström.

Each season changes you / Den Invasiva hösten, 2021

Miriam Parkman April 26, 2023

A hand knotted rya/flossa made for the Studio Supersju exhibition “The four seasons” 2021. The dual title refers to a song by Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner and then to a feeling of loneliness and grief illustrated by the specific day fall enters, replacing summer’s warm air with a chill.

Indigofera x Miriam Parkman

Miriam Parkman November 17, 2020

A collaboration between Swedish men’s denim brand Indigofera and Miriam Parkman, The High Coast collection is based on a mutual appreciation for the magnificence of nature and the knowledge of craft.

Being the first women’s wear collection for Indigofera, it’s a trail blazer for female work wear yet it follows the same high quality, long-lasting and classic design that signifies the brand. Designed by me with inspiration from my daily work as a textile artist and my love for 40s-60s western- and work wear, the collection includes one pair of jeans, one pair of duck canvas work pants, a flannel shirt, a wrap dress/coat, two blankets and a blanket jacket.

The colors depicts my roots in the High Coast area of Sweden, a unique landscape where high mountains steep right into the Baltic ocean. Pine forests and salty rocks - pitch dark in the winter and bright light and sunny in the summer. Contrasts that can be seen in the two blankets, Midnight Dazzler and Treasure Trail; both scaled up from my hand woven originals, the first in a classic southern Swedish “blixtrölakan” pattern and the second one entirely made from a curiosity of exploring the endless possibilities of the technique.

The collaboration began in spring 2019 and was released in september 2020. The garments are made in Portugal and the blankets in Norway. The whole collection can be found here .

//English below//

Att Väva - “To Weave” - is the hand book in weaving created by Arianna Funk and Miriam Parkman. We went to the same school, worked side by side in the same studio, often work in the same techniques but constantly end up with completely different results. With this book, we’d like to invite a new generation to weaving, as well as the existing one, with a creative, lustful and modern approach. The book is currently only available in Swedish but an english translation is in the works!
